How to Find Cheap Airfares
There are a myriad of fascinating and fun travel destinations across the globe. However, getting to them can be expensive. There are ways, however, to be able to pay less for one's airlines tickets just by following a few proven tricks that work both in Europe, and in the United States.
The first rule for finding cheap airfares is to always be willing to negotiate the times and dates of travel. Prices for airfare can fluctuate, not only by date, but also by the hour. Check the major online travel venues that compare prices for the day of desired travel. Then check prices for the day prior to the original date, and the day after. Great bargains can sometimes be found by doing this. If the travel date is during the holiday rush, try to avoid traveling on the standard days when airlines are particularly busy. For example, most people travel on the day prior to Christmas Eve and return home the day after Christmas. Big savings can be found by catching a flight very early on Christmas Eve morning and returning on the last flight out on Christmas day. This is true of most major holidays.
Remember that the more advanced the ticket purchase, the more likely it is to cost less. If it is possible to book a flight three weeks in advance, ticket prices can sometimes be as much as 50% less. In most cases, the fares will rise daily until the date of departure. Some airlines give discounts if the passenger allows a Saturday to pass prior to booking the return flight. However, this is more often not the case. Flying mid-week, however, can result in big savings.
Sometimes, fares can be less expensive if the flight is booked into an airport that neighbors the city of destination. For example, flights into Oakland, California are generally less expensive than flying into San Francisco, and flying into Newark, New Jersey can be less expensive than flying into New York City. In Europe, the airports located within particular cities can be less expensive. For example, it is generally less expensive to fly into London's Gatwick Airport, as opposed to flying into Heathrow. In Paris, it tends to be less expensive to fly into Paris- Orly Airport rather than to Charles de Gaulle.
Many people do not bother to check round trip airfares if they are traveling only one way. However, this can be a big mistake. One way tickets almost always cost more than round trip tickets. This is especially true when traveling on international flights. Sometimes, it pays to go ahead and purchase the round trip ticket, even if the return flight will not be used. The savings can be enormous!
